Olympic News for Beijing 2008

Former Ben Lexcen Sports Scholars and UNSW Blues Winners, Jane Saville (Race Walking) and Stuart Gomez (Badminton) will be vying for Olympic glory over the next 2 weeks. Amazingly this will be Jane's 4th  Olympics and she will be trying hard for that elusive Gold Medal.  These Olympics will be the first for Stuart who is currently ranked no 1 in Australia in Mens' Singles category.

Along with Jane and Stuart, UNSW will be proudly represented in the sport of Judo by Semir Pepic, who will represent in the mens +100kg category, and Janelle Shepherd, in the women's +78kg category. This will be Semir's 2nd Olympics having already represented in Athens (along with Sonya Chervonsky).  Judo Section Manager Natalie Galea, Mens Coach, Gavin Kelly and Women's Coach, Angela Deacon are all also UNSW Judo club members, with Natalie having represented as a Judo athlete at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 (while still a student at UNSW).   The UNSW Judo Club has a long tradition of producing Olympic representatives.

In addition, UNSW Sporting Hall of Famer, Lars Kleppich (former Windsurfing World Champion and triple Olympian) will be going to Beijing as one of the Sailing Coaches.  We wish all of our outstanding UNSW athletes and officials the best of luck in Beijing.

Sport and Recreation 2008 Annual Blues Dinner May 30 2008

The 55th Annual Blues Awards and Dinner was held on Friday May 30, 2008 at The John Niland Scientia Building and was an outstanding success.

The night started well  with the vice chancellor presenting our 22 Ben Lexcen Sports Scholars with their certificates. Guest speaker Simon Poidevin set the tone for an
enjoyable evening by talking about the importance of
sport at university.  Professor Hilmer echoed Simon’s comments noting that sport was an important part of life
and in particular university life.

The Blues Dinner was held in the fantastic surrounds of Leighton Hall at the John Niland Scientia Building, this was
a vast improvement in ambience from our previous venue
the Roundhouse.  The scene was set for a classy evening. The MC Mr Adam Mark did an excellent job of keeping the evening moving and asking insightful questions from our
two special guest speakers Justin Jones and Geoff Lawson.  Justin Jones gave an awesome presentation describing
and journey and planning involved in the lead up to his ‘crossing the ditch’ by kayak from Australia to NZ late last year.  Justin is a current student and member of our
Rugby club. His presentation was very inspiring had everyone spellbound. Geoff Lawson gave us a glimpse of life in Pakistan and what it was like to work as Head Coach of the national cricket team.

Nine sporting Blues were awarded on the night along with four Sports Recognition Awards and our new awards for male and female athlete of the year, coach and administrator of the year and team of the year.  The coveted ‘Club of the Year’ trophy was won by the Judo Club.
