The 55th Annual Blues Awards and Dinner was held on Friday May 30, 2008 at The John Niland Scientia Building and was an outstanding success.

The night started well with the vice chancellor presenting our 22 Ben Lexcen Sports Scholars with their certificates. Guest speaker Simon Poidevin set the tone for an
enjoyable evening by talking about the importance of
sport at university. Professor Hilmer echoed Simon’s comments noting that sport was an important part of life
and in particular university life.

The Blues Dinner was held in the fantastic surrounds of Leighton Hall at the John Niland Scientia Building, this was
a vast improvement in ambience from our previous venue
the Roundhouse. The scene was set for a classy evening. The MC Mr Adam Mark did an excellent job of keeping the evening moving and asking insightful questions from our
two special guest speakers Justin Jones and Geoff Lawson. Justin Jones gave an awesome presentation describing
and journey and planning involved in the lead up to his ‘crossing the ditch’ by kayak from Australia to NZ late last year. Justin is a current student and member of our
Rugby club. His presentation was very inspiring had everyone spellbound. Geoff Lawson gave us a glimpse of life in Pakistan and what it was like to work as Head Coach of the national cricket team.
Nine sporting Blues were awarded on the night along with four Sports Recognition Awards and our new awards for male and female athlete of the year, coach and administrator of the year and team of the year. The coveted ‘Club of the Year’ trophy was won by the Judo Club.
